After reading the brief article that is at the link below, it got me thinking again.
http://www.hollywoodjesus.com/musicdetail.cfm?i=D3981D2E-DD0D-8CAB-ACD7515CD9BD6BB5This elaborates a little bit on one of my earlier questions regarding the story behind 10,000 Days in my 'Arrogance' post.
Not much more than the obvious is stated apart from the fact that Maynard was raised a Baptist. How interesting?
I often wonder whether song lyrics are mocking or genuinely searching. I'm not saying I think either way, in fact despite the author of the above article's hope, I'd still lean towards mocking when it comes to Tool; however, the quoted lyrics in that article are very interesting. Reading further into Jambi (a song which I had stopped listening to because of the line "tempted the devil with my song", which for some reason kept getting stuck in my head), I realised that I hadn't noticed the context of "but you changed that all for me".
It makes me think again and illustrates the importance of thinking about what I listen to.
It also raised another question for me. Maynard was raised a Baptist right, so if things had gone differently with his mum, he might still be a
Christian (quote-unquote). So, here's my gripe - he's obviously a talented musician - so where the hell are the Christian bands who have the potential to be as awesome as tool?
I still have never found a
Christian band that I can listen to non-stop and then pick up a year or so later and think that it's still as cool as when I first heard it. Is it because Christians aren't as talented? Is it because Christians aren't as intelligent? I think not. So why I ask you? Why? I mean I heard this Christian guy's album a few days ago and about 15 seconds in I was bored - granted there was a whole 15 second where I was thinking this is quite cool - but then zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Now what can I do about it? Not much, can't play anything to save my life, well anything except the trumpet - not exactly the most practical of instruments for a band. But maybe one day I'll actually achieve my goal of a home studio and record an album with musicians I know are insanely talented and I reckon could give tool a run for their money.
Arrogant? Yep, that's me.
